HCC’s Financial Aid Event of the Year
Seniors are invited to attend this Financial Aid Workshop on Saturday, February 7th from 9:00am – 1:00pm at HCC Student Services Hall, RCF 400. Professional assistance will be available to help you complete your 2009-2010 FAFSA form. You will need to bring your (and your parent’s if you are a dependent student) Pre-Application worksheet**; pin number**, social security number; 2008 federal income tax return; 2008 W-2 statement; 2008 untaxed income records. Youth Business Plan Competition
This competition is open to minority high school students who have an idea for a fussiness; want the opportunity to win money; learn the basics of developing a business and to work with a mentor to develop their plan. Carson Scholars Fund Scholarship
Next Monday, December 15th is the last day for students in the 9th, 10th, and 11th grades to give their name to Mr. Kelly or Mrs. Bernhardt in order to be considered as Atholton High School’s nominee for The Carson Scholars Fund Scholarship, founded by Dr. Ben Carson. Applicant must have a 3.75 GPA or higher and must demonstrate humanitarian qualities in school and community through school programs and/or community service above and beyond what is required. Only one student can be nominated for this $1000 scholarship from Atholton High School.
Discover Scholarship Program
The Discover Scholarship Program awards up to $300,000 in scholarships annually to high school juniors. Any current high school junior who has at least a 2.75 cumulative grade point average for 9th and 10th grades and exemplary achievements in Leadership and Community Service while overcoming an Obstacle is eligible to apply. Scholarships may be used for any type of post-high school education or training at a two or four year college or technical school. Best Buy @15 Scholarship Program
1000 scholarships of $1500 each will be awarded to students in 9th,10th,11th, and 12th grade who have solid grades, involved in volunteer community service/work experience. 2009 Women of Tomorrow Scholarship
This is open to all female students in grade 9 – 12 must have taken initiative to start special projects in the community that involve others and encourages other to contribute. If you would like to be considered for t his scholarship please give your name to Mr. Kelly or Mrs. Bernhardt by February 27, 2009. We can only submit one student from Atholton High School.
2009 Black History Oratory Contest
We have received the entry forms and information on this year Black History Oratory Contest. This is open to all students in all grades. An essay of 600 words or less, written on one of three topics is required from anyone who enters. The forms are in our office and the deadline to apply is January 27th.
Engineering Mini-Camp for girls in grades 9-12
On February 7, 2009 at Widener University’s Chester campus a Mini-Camp for girls in grades 9-12 interested in engineering will be held. At the same time a workshop will be offered to parents “Sending Your Daughter to Engineering School”. Please have your daughter indicate that you plan to attend this program on her camp registration. Your attendance is optional; your daughter can attend the Girls’ Camp without you.
Science and Engineering Apprentice Program
If you are you interested in science and engineering and looking for a summer job, the Science and Engineering Apprentice Program maybe what you are looking for. This is an eight week apprenticeship which runs from June 22 to August 14, 2009. and pays $1500 paid in two installments. Students who have completed at least grade 9; are 16 years old by the start of the program; and a US citizen are eligible to apply. To apply and get more information, go to www.asee.org/seap. Albert Schweitzer’s Leadership for Life
Registering for Albert Schweitzer’s Leadership for Line conference will put student on the leadership fast track for an exciting future. To participate in the program, students must; be a current student in 9 – 12 grades; have in interest in leadership, developing an awareness of social needs and issues, and commitment to community service. Registration for the 2009 spring conference is now open. You are encouraged to apply early to ensure your place only 100 students will attend each conference. The cost of the three day conference is $200 and this is the total amount – no other fees are charged. The CARE Center
The CARE Center for Child and Adolescent Resources is a free service for people living in Howard County. The staff works with families to identify their needs and help them find solutions. Scholarships - Regular Scholarships
McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship: Scholarship opportunity for high school seniors who already own a business. For application and more information go to www.mckelveyfoundation.org/entrepreneurial. Deadline January 25, 2009.
Leslie Moore Foundation Scholarship: This scholarship is open to all high school seniors who attend Baltimore or Howard County Public Schools. You must have at least a 2.0 GPA; verifiable community service, and plan to attend a 2 or 4 year college or university or a technical school. All applications and supporting materials must be received by March 1st, 2009 – postmark dates of March 1st will not be accepted.
SHERO Scholarship: This scholarship is for a female high school senior who attend Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, and Howard Counties; has demonstrated an understanding of the value of giving time and talent to help others; verifiable community service; demonstrate financial need; attend a 2 or 4 year college/ university or a technical school. All applications/ materials must be received by March 1st, 2009 – postmark dates of March 1st will not be accepted.
BCF Common Application for 10 Scholarships: This application may be used to apply for 10 different scholarships offered through the Baltimore Community Foundation – all requirements are different, so please review them carefully – to find out if you qualify go to www.bcf.org/scholarships and click on How To Apply. Deadline for early application is February 15, 2009 this will be pass along to CollegeBound Foundation. Standard application deadline is April 1, 2009.
Federal Water Quality Asso. Scholarship: $1000 - $2000 renewable scholarship for students preparing for careers in environmental protection with studies leading to a degree in applicable sciences or engineering. Acceptable areas of study: environmental sciences, environmental engineering, biology, chemistry, civil engineering, chemical engineering, or natural resource planning. Deadline April 20, 2009.
Asso of Retired Howard Co. Personnel (HEART) Scholarships: 2 $1000 scholarships offered for student who plan to enter the field of education; have at least a 3.0 GPA; been involved in community activities and/or extracurricular activities. Deadline is April 1, 2009.
West Virginia Wesleyan College Performing Arts Scholarship: for students – you do not have to major in music or theatre to receive one of these awards. To schedule an audition call 800-722-9933. Audition dates: January 26 – Dance Only; February 7 & 21 Music & Theatre Auditions; February 22 – Dance, Music, and Theatre.

Howard County General Hospital Rising Business Star Scholarship: This is for a senior who is a minority, a female and/or a person with a disability who has demonstrated an initiative in the business community. Winners will be selected based evidence of business achievement by starting a small business, assisting an existing business in a significant way, or developing a creation or invention targeted towards business. Earl H. Saunders Entrepreneurial Scholarship: For a Howard County resident who is a minority, woman and/or person with a disability. Beginning as a full or part-time student in an entrepreneurial program/course of study in 2007. The application must be complete and received by March 6, 2009. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Columbia Alumnae Chapter Scholarship: Four scholarships and a book award are available to African-American males and females in the senior class. Deadline for all scholarship applications is March 31, 2009.
Future Educator Scholarship: For students who plan to major in education and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better; provided service to the school or community through involvement in organizations, volunteer groups, or extracurricular activities and demonstrate leadership abilities by holding office, chairing a committee, or other.
Dr. Betty Shabazz Scholarship: For students who plan to major in the field of mathematics, science, or technology and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better; provided service to the school or community through involvement in organizations, volunteer groups, or extracurricular activities and demonstrate leadership abilities by holding office, chairing a committee, or other.
Gilda Lewis Public Service Award: Qualifying students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better; provided service to the school or community through involvement in organizations, volunteer groups, or extracurricular activities and demonstrate leadership abilities by holding office, chairing a committee, or other.
Celonia B. Walden Award for the Performing Arts: For students planning to major in the Performing Arts students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better; provided service to the school or community through involvement in organizations, volunteer groups, or extracurricular activities and demonstrate leadership abilities by holding office, chairing a committee, or other.
Book Money Award: For students who provided service to the school and the community through involvement in organizations, volunteer groups, or other activities demonstrating leadership and have a GPA of 2.5 or better.
